Motion Computing LE1600 FAQ’s:
Motion Computing LS800 FAQ's Motion Computing LE1600 FAQ’s What enhancements have been made to the LE1600 Tablet
PC compared to previous products? The latest product in Motion’s award-winning
line of Tablet PC products and peripherals, the LE1600 offers
multiple enhancements over previous-generation Tablet PCs:
Design: The new sleek, tapered design is about ¼ of
a pound lighter and about ¼ of an inch thinner with
a well-placed centre of gravity that delivers a slim, well-balanced
product design that is light and stable to hold and easy for
mobile users to carry.
Performance: Upwards of 20% faster than the M1400, the LE1600
is designed from the ground up using Intel’s Sonoma
system architecture, including the latest Intel Mobile Pentium
M low-voltage processor or the latest Mobile Intel Celeron
M ultra-low-voltage processor, the latest 915GMS Express Chipset,
and the latest 400MHz DDRII memory.
Battery Life: The LE1600 now offers up to a full day of battery
life with the optional breakthrough-design high-capacity Lithium
Polymer Extended Battery.
Battery Logistics: Both the Standard and Extended Batteries
are hot-swappable when used in conjunction with one another;
the Extended Battery offers a flat, super-slim balanced design
that maintains the length and width of the Tablet PC for optimal
holding comfort and fit in the crook of one’s arm.
Convertible Keyboard: Motion’s new innovative Convertible
Keyboard now truly bridges the gap between “pure slate”
and “convertible” Tablet PC product offerings.
The new sturdier design also serves as a mini-dock with charging
capability, a USB port, and a Motion Accessory Port.
Security: In addition to an integrated Fingerprint Reader,
the LE1600 now offers an integrated Trusted Platform Module
(TPM), an actual hardware chip on the Tablet PC used to authenticate
the device and strengthen existing security. Furthermore,
the new Motion Security Centre demystifies the ordinarily
complex tasks associated with configuring security settings
by providing easy links to set-up instructions for using the
Softex OmniPass Fingerprint Reader and Infineon TPM security
applications.
Reliability: Motion’s inherently durable “pure
slate” design is now even lighter due to the sturdy
carbon fiber upper housing, which in conjunction with the
magnesium lower housing, maintains the system’s structural
integrity. Top off the absence of moving parts such as an
embedded keyboard, a rotating hinge, or an LCD housing latch
(typical mechanical risk points on non-slate devices) with
the more reliable 1.8” HDD selected to reduce the risk
of shock induced failures by half, and the LE1600 is equipped
to handle the rigors of day-to-day mobile computing in even
the toughest environments.
Speak Anywhere™ improvements: Motion’s industry-leading
Speak Anywhere technology just got better. Because we realize
that some users dictate in portrait mode while others dictate
in landscape mode, we incorporated a unique 3-microphone design
that switches intelligently between two relative dual microphone
arrays depending on the orientation of the user’s screen.
New directional microphones round out the supreme audio package
which continues to provide the ability to configure the range
of audio acceptance, suppress background noise, and provide
acoustic echo cancellation.
Connectivity: In addition to an integrated 802.11 connection
(standard Intel PRO/Wireless BG standard or optional Atheros
Super AGTM card*) and integrated Bluetooth which is provided
at no additional cost, the LE1600 now offers Gigabit Ethernet
support as well as a new IrDA port for connecting to a truly
broad array of wireless networks and peripheral devices. (*Note:
Tablet PCs ordered with the Atheros Super AGTM card will not
ship before approximately 7/15/05, after FCC approval has
been obtained. FCC Disclaimer: This device has not been authorized
as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission.
This device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease,
or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained.)
Expansion: In addition to a standard PC Card slot provided
to support legacy devices, the LE1600 includes a new Secure
Digital (SDIO) slot for connecting new peripherals or backing
up data.
Video out: While VGA support remains to support legacy devices,
the LE1600 is now equipped with advanced Digital Video Interface
(DVI-D) support for access to the best quality images afforded
by the latest projectors and flat panel displays.
Audio playback: More robust speakers enhance the quality and
impact of multimedia sales presentations, training module
delivery and other types of audio-dependent media usage such
as watching movies or listening to music.
What are the dimensions and weight of the LE1600? Motion Computing’s thin and light “pure
slate” Tablet PC features a tapered design that ranges
from a slender 0.74” to 0.87” (18.7mm to 22mm).
The tapered design includes a slightly raised area adjacent
to the slim cylindrically-shaped Standard Battery to provide
a comfortable gripping rim for holding and carrying the Tablet
PC.
The Motion design team carefully planned the overall Tablet
PC design and location of components to place the system’s
centre of gravity in the centre of the product, resulting
in an extremely well-balanced design. By ensuring that each
edge of the product is weighted in proportion to the others,
Motion’s design intent is to reduce the risk of tipping
to the side while being used. To enhance mobility further,
the base configuration of the LE1600 with the Standard Battery
weighs only 3.13 pounds. The addition of Motion’s optional
market-leading View Anywhere™ technology results in
a system weight of only 3.24 pounds.
The optional super-slim and lightweight Extended Battery greatly
increases mobility by delivering more than 7 hours of battery
life while adding less than a pound of weight. The optional,
innovative Convertible Keyboard adds only 1.6 pounds without
burdening the user with the additional weight of an integrated
keyboard all the time.
What are the key underlying technologies designed
into the LE1600? The LE1600 Tablet PC incorporates the Intel®
Pentium® M Processor 758 (2MB L2 cache, 1.50GHz, 400MHz
FSB) with options for the LV 738 (1.4GHz) or the ULV 753 (1.2GHz),
400MHz DDRII Memory, the Intel® 915GMS chipset, a 12.1”
XGA wide view display (with up to 180° viewing angles),
an optional View Anywhere® display, and a WACOM digitizer
which enables natural pen input using Motion’s exclusive
ergonomically-designed Digitizer Pen.
For users who may not require the latest processor performance
delivered by Motion’s high-end configuration, Motion
also offers a configuration with the Intel® Celeron®
M Processor Ultra Low Voltage 373 (512KB L2 cache, 1GHz, 400MHz
FSB).
For high-end graphics performance to meet even the most demanding
needs, the LE1600 incorporates the Mobile Intel® 915GMS
Express Chipset, which features the Intel® Graphics Media
Accelerator 900, enabling up to 1.4X graphics performance
improvement over the Intel® 855GME chipset
Motion offers two hard drive capacities to meet two tiers
of storage needs: a 60GB HDD or a 30GB HDD. The latest 1.8”
hard-disk drive format not only contributes to the thinness
and light weight of the LE1600, but also greatly increases
reliability by reducing the risk of shock-induced failures
– addressing an important durability requirement for
highly mobile users.
What processors are being used on the LE1600 product
line? The LE1600 is available in two base configurations
with choice of processors:
· Intel® Pentium® M Processor LV 758 (1.5GHz)(latest
processor in Intel’s Mobile Pentium M LV range), or
LV 738 (1.4GHz), or ULV 753 (1.2GHz)
· Intel® Celeron® M Processor ULV 373 (latest
processor in Intel’s Mobile Celeron ULV range)
What chipset is used on the LE1600 product line? The LE1600’s chipset is the Mobile Intel®
915GMS Express Chipset.
What are the main differences between the 915GMS
Express Chipset used on the LE1600 and the 855GME Chipset
used on the M1400 Tablet PC? The 915GMS chipset offers a vast improvement in video
performance (41% improvement in 3DMark score in one Intel
benchmark analysis) and is equipped to support Microsoft’s
Longhorn operating system when it launches in the future.
The 915GMS chipset was designed to support the new Sonoma
architecture and a higher-performance memory interface, while
the 855GME chipset was designed at the time that the previous-generation
Dothan CPU architecture was introduced. The newer 915GMS chipset
supports the new faster 400MHz DDRII memory available on the
LE1600, while the older 855GME chipset supports the previous-generation
333MHz DDR memory.
The 915GMS chipset includes the Intel® GMA 900 Integrated
Graphics controller with 128MB of video RAM, whereas the 855GME
uses the Intel Direct AGP Integrated Graphics controller which
includes only 64MB of video RAM.
What is the difference between DDRI and DDRII memory? DDRII is the latest memory architecture that delivers
improved system performance, higher data bandwidths, lower
latency and better power consumption for mobile devices.
Which integrated graphics controller is used on the
LE1600? The LE1600 uses the Intel® GMA 900 graphics controller.
What are the important security features on the LE1600? The LE1600 offers an integrated Fingerprint Reader
for secure user authentication, with the added benefit of
global password management. Furthermore, the LE1600 offers
a new security feature – a Trusted Platform Module (TPM)
1.1, which offers the following benefits:
· Actual hardware chip on tablet
· Used to authenticate device and strengthen existing
security
· Hardware is tougher to infiltrate then software
· Adds personal secure drive
· Strengthens applications by protecting digital certificates
In addition, the system offers enhanced BIOS-level security
with pre-boot authentication, a universal lock slot for physical
asset protection, and a Motion Security Centre software panel
that grants quick access to the Motion Omni Pass software
for configuring the Fingerprint Reader and to the Infineon
software for configuring the TPM.
What is the difference between DVI-D and DVI-I? DVI-D is digital only. DVI-I has additional pins
to support analogue video, and can support a VGA connection
with the use of an adapter. The LE1600 uses DVI-D rather than
DVI-I, since the LE1600 includes a dedicated VGA port.
Why did Motion add an IrDA port to the LE1600? Since Bluetooth and IrDA are the preferred means
for synchronizing one’s Tablet PC with other devices,
or for connecting to peripherals such as printers, Motion
now offers both connectivity options on the LE1600.
The Fingerprint Reader now has a scrolling capability
– what does that mean?
While the 4-way directional control button on the exterior
of the system continues to allow users to move the cursor
up, down, left and right, the new scrolling capability of
the Fingerprint Reader allows users to run the pad of their
finger over the Fingerprint Reader either horizontally or
vertically to accomplish scrolling when a scrollbar is present
in a window. The Fingerprint Reader automatically switches
to scroll mode when a scrollbar is present and when the system
is not engaged in an authentication task.
What is the data transfer rate on the IrDA port? Up to 4MBps.
What is the data transfer rate on the SDIO slot? Up to 10MBps.
Why does Motion no longer offer a 1394 Firewire port? The USB 2.0 ports on the LE1600 offer similar bandwidth
to 1394 Firewire, and Motion’s external DVD/CD-RW drive
operates over USB 2.0 so Firewire is no longer a required
port for high-bandwidth connections to peripherals.
What is the hard-disk drive offering on the LE1600? Motion offers two hard drive capacities to meet two
tiers of storage needs: A 60GB HDD for storage-hungry users
or a 30GB HDD for users with less storage-intensive requirements.
The latest 1.8” hard-disk drive format not only contributes
to the light weight and smaller size of the LE1600, but also
uses less power and greatly increases reliability by reducing
the risk of shock-induced failures – addressing an important
durability requirement for highly mobile users.
How does the LE1600’s 1.8” hard-disk
drive compare to the earlier-generation 2.5” drives? In addition to lower power consumption and weight,
the most significant benefit of 1.8” drives to mobile
users is the improved shock resistance, both during operation
and non-operational transport. The 1.8” 30GB HDD delivers
all storage gigabytes on a single disk platter, which rotates
at 4200rpm, resulting in lower energy consumption in addition
to quiet operation. (Note: The 60GB HDD is dual-platter.)
To ensure high performance during data-intensive read and
write cycles, the built-in controller also includes a 2MB
data cache.
Which manufacturer supplies the product hard drives
to Motion? Hitachi and Toshiba are Motion’s suppliers
of choice for the LE1600’s HDDs.
What is the battery life on the LE1600 Tablet PC? The battery life with the Extended Battery plus the
Standard Battery is more than 7 hours, depending on configuration
and usage. The battery life with the Standard Battery is over
3 hours.
Where does the Extended Battery attach on the LE1600
Tablet PC? The Extended Battery attaches flat against the back
of the Tablet PC. Simply slide open the centrally-located
door on the back of the Tablet PC, fit the small four tabs
at the bottom of the battery into the slots at the lower rear
side of the Tablet PC, then flatten the battery against the
back of the system.
Is the Extended Battery a “Motion exclusive”
product? Yes, the Extended Battery was designed specifically
for the LE1600 and is exclusively available from Motion Computing.
How long does it take to charge the Standard Battery?
The Standard Battery charges to 90% capacity in
less than an hour and a half (approximately 86 minutes). It
takes approximately 12 minutes more to get to 95% capacity.
The remaining charge can be obtained by charging the unit
for a further length of time, for example, overnight.
How long does it take to charge both the Standard
Battery and the Extended Battery when they are both attached
to the LE1600 at the same time? It takes about 3 hours to charge both the Standard
Battery and the Extended Battery charges to 90% capacity.
With an additional 21 minutes of charging, both batteries
should reach 95% capacity.
What is the charging order of the batteries? The Standard Battery first charges to 95%, then
the Extended Battery charges to 95%. The system then alternates
between charging both batteries until a full charge is achieved.
What is the discharging order of the batteries? The Standard Battery discharges to 35% then the Extended
Battery is discharged to 3%. Power usage then transfers back
to the Standard Battery until it reaches the discharge limit
designated by the operating system. At that point, the system
will go into Hibernation mode.
Are the batteries warm-swappable or hot-swappable?
When both batteries are attached and have at least
a minimal charge remaining, both batteries are completely
hot-swappable. When using just the Standard Battery, or when
just the Extended Battery is attached, either stand-alone
battery is warm-swappable, meaning that either battery can
be swapped quickly after going into Standby or Hibernation
power management mode.
How much does the system weigh with both the Standard
Battery and Extended Battery attached? The new thin, ultra-mobile LE1600 Tablet PC weighs
about 3.1 lbs. The new, super-slim Extended Battery adds a
mere .95 lbs. (431g) to deliver more than 7 hours (when combined
with the Standard Battery) in an innovative design that maintains
the weight distribution and overall dimensional proportions
of Motion's pure slate Tablet PC. When the Extended Battery
is attached to the system to deliver outstanding battery life,
the total solution’s weight is approximately 4.1 lbs.
Why is it recommended that a user purchase an optional
Extended Battery versus using only the Standard Battery? The Standard Battery provides 3+ hours of charge
before requiring AC power to re-charge, sufficient for typical
mobile usage scenarios when access to power between meetings
and off-site visits is readily available via a charging station,
auto/air adapter, or AC adapter. When the Extended Battery
is installed along with the Standard Battery, the user can
have about 7 or more hours of total usage time without the
need to recharge as frequently. Since most users buy Tablet
PCs for mobile use, extending the usage time of their tablet
maximizes productivity and thus the return on their investment.
Is there any downside to purchasing only an additional
Standard Battery versus an Extended Battery? Both additional battery options improve productivity.
On one hand, the Extended Battery more than doubles the total
battery capacity while out in the field and its innovative
battery logistics including its thin, flat design and hot-swap
ability make it ideal for maximizing up time. Carrying a second
Standard Battery, while also a convenient way to increase
effective battery life, requires the user to place the tablet
in standby before swapping the batteries. The Extended Battery
can be installed on the tablet in conjunction with the Standard
Battery, eliminating the need to carry a second battery in
your carrying case. When the Extended Battery is exhausted,
users can quickly and easily shed this item to reduce weight
on the spot.
Does the Extended Battery work with the M1200, M1300,
or M1400 Tablet PCs? No. The LE1600 and M-Series have different types
of batteries.

What keyboards are offered to support the LE1600 Tablet
PC? Motion offers 3 keyboard choices: 1) An innovative
Convertible Keyboard that attaches to the front or the back
of the Tablet PC that also serves as a mini-dock with charging
capability, a USB port and a Motion Accessory Port; 2) a Wireless
Mobile Keyboard offering Bluetooth connectivity; and 3) a
compact USB keyboard.
Why does Motion Computing offer three keyboards? The Convertible Keyboard is highly optimized to deliver
the ultimate in mobility and convenience. It adds minimal
travel weight and provides a mechanism to hold the tablet
in a horizontal position for keyboarding. Furthermore, the
Convertible Keyboard can serve as a mini-docking solution
with charging capability, and expansion via a USB port and
a separate Motion Accessory Port.
The Bluetooth-equipped Wireless Mobile Keyboard, while small
enough to travel with, is best suited as a companion to the
FlexDock or the Field Case – as it does not provide
a built-in stand to hold the tablet upright for keyboarding.
The USB Mobile Keyboard provides a low cost, compact solution
designed primarily as a companion to the Motion FlexDock.
What is the Motion Accessory Port and what can I
use it for? The Motion Accessory Port is a special, powered USB
port. While all USB ports provide power, the USB specification
for power does not deliver enough power for more power-hungry
devices such as large hard disk drives and DVD optical drives.
The Motion Accessory Port combines USB 2.0 connectivity with
the additional power required to power accessory devices.
Today, the Motion Accessory Port, combined with the Motion
Accessory Cable, can be used to power the Motion USB DVD/CD-RW
optical drive. With this configuration, external AC power
is not required for USB DVD/CD-RW optical drive for use on
airplanes or other environments that do not have access to
AC power.
Does the Convertible Keyboard ship in the Tablet
PC’s system box or separately? The Convertible Keyboard ships separately when ordered
with a new system unit.
What languages are supported by the Convertible Keyboard? At launch in May 2005, the Convertible Keyboard will
be available in 4 language versions: US English, UK English,
German and French.
Does the LE1600 Convertible Keyboard work with the
M1200, M1300, or M1400? No, because it was specially designed to fit the
LE1600 Tablet PC. Due the mechanical interface between the
keyboard and the Tablet PC, the Convertible Keyboard cannot
be used with the Motion M-Series tablets.
Why did Motion choose the pointing stick versus a
touch pad for the mouse pointer on the Convertible Keyboard? The choice of pointing device is a highly subjective
one. Implementing a touchpad or trackball required growing
the keyboard significantly in size – which did not support
the mobile design goals of this product. Second, touch pads
usually require the user to move their hands from the keys
when typing a document. While this works well for web browsing,
it can be considered a disadvantage for authoring or typing
a document. Because the pen interface already provides an
ideal pointing device for web browsing, Motion was able to
optimize the keyboard pointing device to better support traditional
typing tasks.
How has durability been designed into the Convertible
Keyboard? The Convertible Keyboard has undergone considerable
life-cycle testing. The support stabber is tested to 5,000
cycles and the primary letter keys are tested to a minimum
of 10 million uses. All special keys (such as Tab, ESC, Insert,
etc...) and mouse buttons are tested to 3 million uses. Additionally,
the mounting post support mechanisms are tested to a minimum
of 5,000 open/close cycles.
How has the durability of the connection to the keyboard
improved with the LE1600 Convertible Keyboard? Because the new Convertible Keyboard was designed
in conjunction with the new LE1600 Tablet PC, the Motion design
team has been able to optimize the connectivity and durability
of the design. The new design also replaces the USB cable
assembly in favour of a connector fixed directly to the folding
support arm. This reduces the concern about loose connections.
Is the viewing angle adjustable on my LE1600 Convertible
Keyboard? Yes, the viewing angle can be adjusted from 90 to
140 degrees. Simply push back on the tablet when installed
in the Convertible Keyboard and it will hold in your desired
position.
